The surface is then worked on with sand paper to further smoothen it & is ready for lacquer art application. It is painted in different layers of lacquer colors (generally three to four colors) by covering each layer completely with the next one. The craftsman then scratches the upper most layer with a pen type sharp edge tool in such a manner that the lower layer appears. Scratching the same layer further exposes color used in the next layer thus a pattern with different color begin to appear. It is the scratching skill of layers which make a significant difference in lacquer art to make beautiful designs on wooden pieces.
